Overview

Camping is the Calling Card of the Boy Scouts of America.  We do more camping than any other youth organization in America and we are pretty good at it.  Earn the Camping Merit Badge by becoming an expert at camping with the BSA.

You will learn the 4 major components of EVERY SINGLE campout:

  1. Preparation – it’s in the motto – BE PREPARED.  A campout ill prepared is not one that is much fun.  Learn about preparing for a campout.
  2. Gearing Up – the gear makes a difference and in some weather conditions, it makes all of the difference. Learn about the gear and tools of excellent camping.
  3. Making Camp & Breaking Camp – Leave No Trace is a rule, not a guide.  We make it better, we do it better, we do it safely and leave it better.
  4. How to Give Your Camping Meaning – it can just be a day in the woods, or you can soak it in and get more out of the wonderful places we get to enjoy.

Completing this course will help you:

Who is the course for?

This course is required for all Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America.  Learning about Camping is one thing, completing the 20 camping nights is another.  What you do and where you do it is up to you.

Learning Path

All of the planning from site location and activities, to food, water, safety and security.  Everything you need to know and do to enjoy your time in the great outdoors.

The gear you need depends on where you are going and what you hope to achieve.  Backpacking requires lightweight thinking and efficient food stores.  Summer Camp and week long excursions require thinking about campgrounds, layouts, latrines and kitchens.  Whatever camping you are doing, the gear makes it all possible.

Site location, latrines, water, fire, cooking, fun, activities.  How you make and break camp is going to set you up for successful outings no matter the weather or the purpose.  Learn the essentials of safety and setting up camps and taking them down.

Most kids your age will be playing video games while you are out camping.  What makes camping special and interesting to you?  Learn how to identify the wilderness you are in – plants, animals, secret trails, geological wonders, time with friends.  Camping is an experience you can enjoy your entire life if you learn how to take in what is around you and be a good steward of what you have.
