Overview

The Personal Fitness Merit Badge is about five(5) types of fitness:  Mental, Social, Spiritual, Emotional and Physical.  Our understanding of people with a great deal of happiness and balance in their lives maintain fitness in these five areas.  

The Personal Fitness Merit Badge Course will examine the types of fitness in the Session 1 and take the initial Physical Fitness assessment.  From there, Scouts will have 90 days to track your fitness, dietary consumption and reflect on how you tend to your Emotional, Spiritual, Social and Mental fitness.

Scouts will use BSA Troop 759 Personal Fitness tracking Google Sheets and will record fitness efforts over 90 days on a program that is mutually agreed to by the Counselor and the Scout on the first day of the course.

Learn about balancing nutrition for your body with nutrition for your soul and your mind.  Learn about the dangers of alcohol, smoking, drugs, peer pressure and preventable diseases.

How do you manage your Social Mental, Spiritual, Emotional and Physical Fitness today?

Review the many aspects of Physical fitness from diseases, to body structure, exertion and physical activity, building strength and endurance.  Why it is important to maintain a fit body.

Your body is a machine; what you feed it is the fuel.  We will review the USDA recommended diet and understand the issues of too much sugar and fats and not enough protein and health carbohydrates.  We will look at three components of a sound weight loss program and a program for balanced fitness.

Assess your aerobic fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, and body composition and record the information.

All Scouts will provide a comprehensive fitness and nutrition program for the next 12 weeks.  Scouts will track caloric intake, physical activity among a set of predefined exercises and log that information in a Fitness tracker every day for 12 weeks.  At the end of the 12 weeks, the Fitness assessment will be completed again and Scouts will look at their improvement over 12 weeks.

Using the BSA Troop 759 Google Doc Template, create a short paper on a career in personal fitness.  Identify three paths, select one and find out the education, training and experience required for the profession.  Discuss with your counselor after reviewing your fitness journal.
